Weight Training: More on Metabolism
So I already mentioned that your resting (basal) metabolic rate becomes elevated when you have more muscle. But the metabolic benefits are two fold! AFTER you are done lifting weights, your metabolism remains EXTRA elevated for up to twenty-four hours! Why is this?
The main reason is that weight training, by nature, is an anaerobic, intense workout, filled with short bursts of extreme activity. This extreme activity demands a lot of energy from your body and the mitochondria in your cells begin firing like crazy to produce the explosive energy demands required to move the weights. Your body however, is bad at stopping this extra expenditure immediately. After intense exercise, it takes a long time to return to it’s metabolic equilibrium. The key to maximizing this elevated metabolism, is to PUSH yourself in your workouts and go 100%. REALLY TEST YOURSELF!
Then, when you’re eating your post workout meal, you can take solace in the fact that many of the calories you’d normally aborb, are getting burned up from your last workout!
